Biographical / Historical

A branch of the United States Department of Agriculture, the United States Forest Service was established in 1905 and is primarily concerned with forest and timber management, but also handles sustainability, conservation, use, and natural and cultural resources related to forests and grasslands. Originally two separate entities, the Clearwater National Forest was established in 1907, only a year before the establishment of the Nez Perce National Forest in 1908. In 2012, the two forests were administratively combined, incorporating both forests’ names to acknowledge and respect the Nez Perce Tribe and their stewardship of these forests since time immemorial.
