Content Description
The Douglas and Marie Eier Collection contains records relating to the Civilian Conservation Corps and the work of the National Association of Civilian Conservation Corps Alumni’s Lewis-Clark Chapter 28, managed by Douglas and Marie Eier. The collection was taken to the University of Idaho Library on February 11, 2015 by Patricia Hart and lvar Nelson. One box was received by Patricia Hart and lvar Nelson from Marie Eier at the Nez Perce Historical Museum on May 29, 2014. A second donation was received June 29, 2014 by Patricia Hart and Ivar Nelson from Marie Eier at her home in Lewiston, ldaho. Marie Eier asked that the materials be donated to the University of Idaho’s Special Collections for public use.
This collection dates from 1933 to 2015 and includes materials related to the CCC organization, personal recollections and correspondence related to the NACCCA in the Northwest, and the Eier's work in managing local NACCCA Chapter 28 in Lewiston, Idaho. Materials include membership information, meeting minutes, and correspondence relating to NACCCA events, member reunions, and the general management of the chapter. Also included is press coverage of the Lewis-Clark chapter's work establishing the "Iron Mike" statue in McCall, ID, which is dedicated to the service of CCC members in Idaho and press coverage from Idaho Public Television's "Outdoor Idaho" program. The collection includes photographs and correspondence from CCC workers Herb VanKirk, Ray Saladin, Lou Mahnia, Chet Wozniak, and Herb Valentine to and from Douglas Eier and CCC service-related papers for workers Jessie Whitehead and Mathew Maksymowicz, including discharge forms and death certificates. Photos of life in the CCC and its camps and members are included, as well as later photos from NACCCA events and the dedication of the Iron Mike statue. The collection also includes press coverage and correspondence with Idaho congressional staffers and members of Congress relating to the management of the NACCCA.
