Biographical / Historical

The first portion of the audio recording dicusses how Nicole Rose was born to Frida Kaufman in Rothschild Hospital in Paris during World War II. Once Nazi Germany occupied France, Rothschild Hospital became a detention center. Jewish women giving birth were at risk due to the required registration and surrender of their children. Medical staff resisted, creating a resistance network where children were declared still born to prevent children being taken away. According to Frida, the hospital staff took name tags of the deceased and substituted it so that the baby and mother could survive. They were than smuggled out of the hospital to be hidden in the French countryside. The event took place in 1942.

The second part is an analysis of the French political parties based on an interview with one of the leaders of the Rally for the Republic political party. This party was first formed by Jacques Chirac in 1976 and was a direct sucessor to the Gaullist coalitions.
