Robert M. Summers acted as an adjuct for the annual Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival for many years. He was a locally known musician and composer. This collection contains music arrangements kept and composed by Summers.

Biographical / Historical

Robert "Bob" Marion Summers was born on February 2, 1928 to Marion T. and Edyth Davis Summers in Garland, Utah. He attended schools in Tremonton, Utah and graduated from Bear River High School. He also attended and graudated from Utah State University and the University of Idaho. During the Korean War, he served in the United States Air Force and was a member of the 748th Air Force Band. In 1957, Summers married Bonnie Manwill in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Summers was well-known in music circles throughout Utah and Idaho. He was a jazz trumpeter and piano player, as well as a composer and arranger. He played in the Idaho State University Community Jazz Band and Community Concert Band in Pocatello, Idaho. Summers taught band and chorus in the Declo, Ashton, Pocatello, Soda Springs, and Bancroft schools. He also taught at Weber State University, Ogden, Utah. He was active as a music director in community musicals, and took the lead of Horace Vandergeller in "Hello Dolly!" Additionally, Summers adjudicated for several years at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival by the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho.

Robert M. Summers passed away on November 1, 1997 in Soda Springs, Idaho.

Arrangement

This collection was original organized in large three-ring binders. The binders were labeled and those labels are the titles of the Series'. Inside each binder, the music arrangements were separated into categories. Those catagories are the file titles in the finding aid. The papers were left in the order that it was recieved.
