Biographical / Historical

In the 1930s, Walter R. Friberg attened the University of Idaho to study in the College of Engineering. During his time at the unviersity he was a member of the Associated Engineers, a member of the Idaho Engineer publicaton staff, president of the Glider Club, a member of the Lutheran Students Association of Amerca, and participated in the military program at U of I.

After serving in World War II, Friberg returned to U of I to be a professor in the Agricultural Engineering department. He is best known for his research on woodfibre diamite concrete, and the construction of an experimental building on campus. He discovered that when a small portion of cement was replaced by diatomaceous earth and common clay, a fire-resistant, lightweight concrete was the product. Friberg recieved approval to build an experimental structure, and had lasted more than thirty years, well into the 1970s.
