Historical Note
In his letter, Phillips writes of his experiences as a recent settler in Shoshone, Idaho, established only four years earlier. Shoshone is the county seat of Lincoln County, located within the Snake River Plain that extends over 400 miles in an east-west direction across southern Idaho. Three million acres of farmland on the Snake River Plain are irrigated, with about one-third from wells and two-thirds from canals. Phillips reports having surveyed the area’s “Dams, Ditch, and Canals” with “entire satisfaction.”

It is believed the Head of the University of Idaho Library’s Special Collections and Archives purchased the letter from a commercial dealer.
