Biographical / Historical
Earl David (1885-1970) was born to Ella and Frank David, on July 12th, 1885. He was the middle child of two other boys in the family. His older brother Homer David (1881-1971) and his younger brother Howard David (1889-?). In 1896, after he and his family moved to Moscow, ID, his father opened up a Badger Store on south Main Street. In 1899 they started a new operation, David and Ely’s Department Store on the corner of 3rd and Main.
Earl worked at his father's department store while he attended the University of Idaho. He received a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering in 1904. He was part of the Mining, Milling and Metallurgical Association where he served in the position of Secretary in 1903. He also took on the role of President of the Junior Class in 1904.
He corresponded frequently with a young woman who he eventually dated, Beatrice Swain. Swain, of Boise ID, was also a student at the University of Idaho. She received a Bachelor of Science in 1912. She was a part of the Delta Gamma Sorority, as well as an active member of the English and Biology club on campus. She also spent 1909-10 studying abroad in Europe. Earl proposed to her in the fall of 1911 (approximately), and were married on January 15th, 1913, in St. Augustine, Florida.
Earl married a second time later in life to Ada Burke. Ada was a resident of Moscow, Idaho and attended the University of Idaho where she received a Bachelor of Arts in 1918. Ada and Earl had a strong affiliation with the University of Idaho's Department of English creating the Earl and Ada David Scholarship.
