US Forest Service Pacific Southwest forest insects files
Scope and Contents
The files include correspondence, data sheets, photograph negatives and prints, reports, drafts of projects, projects, and publications related to the Lodgepole Needleminer Project in Yosemite National Park, the Lindane-Water Administrative Studies, and photo albums depicting insect management in California forests.
Apparently, the files came from the office of John Pierce, Coordinator of the United States Forest Service/Pacific Southwest Region (R5)/Forest Insect and Disease Management (FIDM), related to the “Pilot Project to evaluate the use of Orthene Implants to protect the foliage of high value Lodgepole pines from feeding injury by the Lodgepole Needleminer in Yosemite National Park,” conducted from May 1980 to August 1983. This project was developed as a cooperative effort among Yosemite National Park, R-5 FIDM and Pacific Southwest Forest and Range Experiment Station. The leader of the project was Lorne West, from YNP and the scientist of the project, Tom Koerber.
“Lindane Water Administrative Studies” is the short name of the “Administrative Study to Test the Effectiveness and Residual Life of a 1.5% Lindane-Water Spray Against Dendroctonus Brevicomis Lec.,” prepared by Homer J. Hixon, Chief of the Division of Timber Management and Donald W. Lynch, Assistant Director of the Pacific Southwest Forest and Range Experiment Station, in December 12, 1966. This project was conducted from January to April 1967. It was subsequently supplemented in October 20, 1967, by Paul E. Heff, Chief of the Division of Timber Management and D. W. Lynch, through April 1978 to ensure the effectiveness of the treatment against the western pine beetle.
