Kyle Laughlin photograph collection

 Collection
Identifier: PG 99

Scope and Contents

The collection includes nature scenes including rivers, creeks, agricultural scenes, flowers and plants, and geologic formations, mainly throughout the Pacific Northwest. Laughlin's photos of landscapes and flora have appeared in numerous publications. River images are of particular interest to people today, as Laughlin captured scenes of the Snake River before the four lower Snake River dams were built in the 1960s and 1970s, showing the beaches and orchards lost to flooding by the rising reservoirs and when salmon runs were still abundant.

Photographs of people inlcude posed portraits and informal photos of Laughlin's family and friends and of the family pets, and of social gatherings and other noted events such as graduation ceremonies and holidays.

The collection was originally processed and described in 1998 and 1999 by Karen Hertel. The collection is organized by type such as negatives and slides, using Laughlin's original numbering and lettering system. Where individual item descriptions were not included in the original inventory, handwritten indexes, if available, were scanned and linked to in this finding aid. Contact prints for the negatives are organized into sprial-bound books. Selected prints were made from both the slides and negatives then organized by Laughlin, many combined into spiral-bound books by topic or subject. Also included are reel films and notes and research written or collected by Laughlin.

In 2009, over 800 negatives were scanned by the University of Idaho Library's Data and Digital Services to create the digital Kyle Laughlin Photograph Collection. Previous digitization attempts have resulted in samll samples within the original numbering system having been scanned, which can be seen as legacy thumbnail links in Special Collections Historical Photograph Database and are noted on this finding aid.

Biographical / Historical

Kyle Emmett Laughlin (1905-1984) was a Moscow, Idaho resident and businessman for 56 years. He was born May 24, 1905 to Edward and Eva Laughlin in Ozark, Missouri. When Laughlin was about seven, the family moved to southeast Idaho where Kyle graduated from Ashton High School. He attended the University of Idaho and graduated in 1931 with a degree in teaching. In 1933, Kyle Laughlin married Marguerite Ward of Moscow. Marguerite had also graduated from the U of I and was working as a teacher in Moscow. The couple spent the next two years in Malad, where Kyle taught chemistry and physics before returning to Moscow in 1935.

Despite being in the midst of the Great Depression, the Laughlins started a ski-equipment department within Ward Paint and Hardware, the Moscow hardware store owned by Marguerite's father. By 1946, Laughlin was able to turn his life-long interest in photography into a business by opening Kyle's Photo Supply. In 1954, a partnership with Sam Haddock resulted in Haddock and Laughlin, a photography, television, appliance, and stereo shop. This business later became the Moscow TvCable Company. Laughlin was also involved in local real estate development.

The Laughlins were dedicated supporters of both the Latah County Public Library and the University of Idaho Library where they had been honored with a reading room named for them.

Despite Laughlin never viewing himself as a professional photographer, his love of photography produced over 4,000 images spanning over 50 years, from the 1920s to the 1970s, capturing the beauty of the region and memories created with family and friends.
