Biographical / Historical

The American Federation of Teachers was first started in 1916 in Chicago, Illinois. The Organization quickly grew in the area, but reached a dip during World War I. It wasn’t until 1932 that a law was passed that ruled against teacher contracts preventing them from joining unions. The AFT was a prominent figure in fighting to bring union rights as far around the United States as possible. The American Federation of Teachers served as a participant in World War II and the Civil Rights Movement, and by the end of the 1960s, members numbered at more than 200,000. The AFT has continued to fight for the rights of teachers and the betterment of education around the country. The Idaho Federation of Teachers is a strong chapter, including the University of Idaho, Boise State University, and Idaho State University. The University of Idaho joined the IFT and AFT in 1974. In 2025, the American Federation of Teachers had nearly 1,690,000 members across the country.
