An assistant professor of music at the University of Idaho, Professor Stump assisted Archie N. Jones with operating the music department. He came to the UI in 1936, was active in Kiwanis, and the First Lutheran church choir. He taught at the University of Minnesota for six years and was a member of a music honorary. He did graduate work at the University of Chicago and Lutheran Theological seminary in MN. Before he turned 20, he had received a BA from Muhlenberg College in PA (1939).
He had a reputation in the midwest as a concert tenor and voice builder. His skill as a voice builder won him a teaching position to Frantz Proschowski and coach to Galli Curci, Tito Schipas, and other renowned singers of the day.
