Scope and Contents
This small collection includes letters from Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Some were sent to Lionel Hampton and some to Idaho Senator McClure after Hampton’s death.

Biographical / Historical
Jazz musician Lionel Hampton (1908-2002) served as a goodwill ambassador for President Eisenhower post-World War II. This role involved him touring the world and playing music. President Bill Clinton honored him with the National Medal of Arts in 1996. In 1992 he was appointed to the board of the Kennedy Center.
