Biographical / Historical

Dr. Richard Lorey Day was born 6 July 1921 in Baldwinville, Massachusetts. During World War II, Dr. Day researched weather for the State Department of the Atlantic Coast. He earned his doctorate from the University of Illinois while on sabbatical from his teaching position at the University of Florida. Dr. Day taught Geography at the University of Idaho from 1960 to 1985. Dr. Day died on 17 November 2007 in Moscow, Idaho. He was known for taking photos, travels, and his interest in trains.

John Welles Brainard was a retired U.S. Army Major living in Moscow Idaho. This collection contains 83 of his landscape photos of northern Idaho and eastern Washington.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Photos were found in Head of Special Collections and Archives office by Dulce Kersting-Lark after an undetermined length of time. They were donated by John Brainard following his acquisition of the photos from a sale after Dr. Richard Day's death.
