Biographical / Historical
The University of Idaho Healing Garden and Memorial was created in 2024. Its construction was prompted by the tragic murders of four University of Idaho students in November of 2022 at an off-campus home shared by three of the victims. University of Idaho (UI) developed the space on campus to honor the lives of those who have died while attending UI. Students from the University’s College of Art and Architecture were asked to draft hardscape and landscape designs, and from that exercise a design was chosen. Several community listening sessions with campus community members and local residents, as well as conversations with family members of those Vandals lost, informed the design. Construction of the Garden and Memorial began in Summer 2024 and was completed in Fall 2024.
The Healing Garden and Memorial Collection (HGMC) is comprised of materials coming from the design and creation of the site, as well as materials left at the site honoring or memorializing a student’s loss.
