Abstract
Correspondence of the Entomology Department, 1926-1952, and of Dean E. J. Iddings, 1935-1938; also financial records, mimeographed circulars of the Agricultural Adjustment Administration and Federal Emergency Relief Administration, correspondence and financial material relating to the University of Idaho-Ecuador Exchange program, 1954-1958, and surveys and reports relating to the Grasshopper and Mormon cricket control projects, 1938-1949.
Arrangement
The material in this record group was left in its original order during processing; likewise, original folder headings were retained.
The correspondence series is divided into two subseries, that of the Department of Entomology and that of Dean Iddings. Each is arranged first by year, then separated into three alphabetical files, one for specific correspondents, a second for general correspondence, and finally a file for correspondence with county agents, or, in the case of Dean Iddings, the Federal Cooperative Extension Office. In both cases the folders were labeled "Extension." Each folder is in chronological order. The verso of the original letter was often used as the carbon copy for the response. The heads of the Entomology Department included in this series are: Fred E. Whitehead, 1926-1927; Claude E. Wakeland, 1928-1937; Wesley E. Shull, 1938-1946; and Hubert C. Manis, 1947-1952.
The financial material includes Extension budgets, budget estimates for both the Extension and the College of Agriculture, fee deposits for agronomy, horticulture, and poultry services, and inventories.
The agricultural assistance programs include the Agricultural Adjustment Administration and the Federal Emergency Relief Administration. The AAA is subdivided into a general file and an agricultural conservation file. All three are arranged alphabetically by subject and include circular letters, reports, publications, and forms.
The final series consists of conferences and projects. The conference section contains mimeographed reports and related publications of conferences dealing with vegetable insects and insect spraying.
In 1954 the University of Idaho entered into a three year technical exchange program with Ecuador. Under Foreign Operations Administration sponsorship, the university sent six people to Ecuador, three each to the Universidad de Guayaquil and Universidad Central at Quito, to bring up to date and expand the country's agricultural knowledge. In return, six Ecuadorians spent a year studying at the University of Idaho. Material in this section includes correspondence with the participants, forms and form letters, semi-annual reports, and requisitions and purchase orders.
The final two sections of this series contain maps and reports relating to grasshopper and Mormon cricket control. These are arranged chronologically. The correspondence related to these surveys is in the correspondence file.
Two cubic feet of Pea Insect Investigation photographs were removed from this collection for eventual incorporation into the photograph collection of the Special Collections Department. Duplicate copies of mimeographed material were discarded, as were field notes for the grasshopper and cricket surveys. Reports on the grasshopper surveys published by the U ' S. Department of Agriculture were transferred to the Government Documents Department of the library. These steps, plus refoldering and reboxing the material, reduced the bulk by 15 cubic feet.
