Samuel Culbertson Orr papers
Scope and Contents
The Orr Ledgers span the years 1837-1966, with the bulk of materials consisting of ledger books covering the years 1928-1964 during Samuel Culbertson Orr’s time managing and working at his orchard in Buhl, Idaho. The ledgers include yearly records of production, expenditures, sums, and receipts for “The Orrchard”, as recorded by Samuel Culbertson Orr and partners Hubert and Claude Smith. Content of these records center around the fruit grown in the orchard, including apples, peaches, pears, plums, and cherries. Some ledgers include additional information, including photographs, tax documents, records of written correspondence, and records of expenditures during a trip Orr took to Europe in 1908. There is also a small section of the collection dedicated to family history, which includes four journals containing grammar studies written primarily in German, one journal dated to 1888 containing bible studies and recipes, and a record of family history and biography written by Samuel Culbertson Orr in 1964. One material falls outside the scope of Orr’s lifetime: a journal containing receipt records, attributed to David Maclean in 1837.

Biographical / Historical
Samuel Culbertson Orr was born near Jacksonville, Pennsylvania in 1875 to Franklin Orr and Martha Maclean Orr. After moving to Washington, Pennsylvania July of 1895, he attended Washington and Jefferson College, where he took classes in Greek, botany, English literature, and English constitutional history. Following his graduation, he entered the Western Theological Seminary at Allegheny, and in 1909, he moved to Buhl, Idaho, where he worked as an ordained Presbyterian minister at the local church. In the years to follow, he left his work at the church to purchase land and establish what would come to be known as “The Orrchard”—a fruit orchard growing apples, peaches, pears, and other produce. In March 1919 he married his wife, Margaret Peebles Orr, with whom he had three daughters: Joan Phoebe, Margaret “Peggy” Peebles, and Kathleen Maxwell. He handled management of the orchard throughout the Depression, until 1945 when he passed management over to his partners, Hubert and Claude Smith. After doing so, he continued to work and live on the farm with his wife. They took numerous trips east and to visit their children until May 1951, when Margaret passed away after a bout of viral pneumonia. Following her death, Orr lived out the remainder of his life in the house at The Orrchard alongside the Smiths, taking summers to visit his children and numerous grandchildren. Paul Warnick, the donor of the collection, is a horticulturist and superintendent of the University of Idaho Arboretum and Botanical Garden. He is the son of Kathleen Orr Porter Warnick and the grandson of Samuel Culbertson Orr.
