The material in this collection belonged primarily to Frank C. Leonhardy. It includes manuscripts, drafts, reports, letters, correspondence, maps, books, magazines, photos, slides, field books, research study proposals, notes, exams by Dr. Leonhardy. Many of these research materials focus on the gold rush unique to the State of Idaho and surrounding areas.

Biographical / Historical
Frank C. Leonhardy was a professor of Anthropology at the University of Idaho. He was born June 8, 1935 in Carbondale, Colorado. He joined the U.S. Army in 1953 and served in Korea until 1955 when he was discharged. He married Lucille Hughes on Sept. 12, 1958, in Portland, Oregon. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology in 1959 from the University of Oregon at Eugene and earned his master’s degree from UO in 1961. He moved to Pullman in 1966 and received his doctorate in Anthropology from Washington State University in 1970. He worked at the Dumbo archaeological site in Oklahoma and has worked in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness area along with many other sites throughout Washington, Idaho and Oregon. He worked on the Dolores site in Colorado in 1985. He taught various classes while employed at WSU and the UI. He also was an advisor to graduates and undergraduates at both schools. He was a member of the Society of American Archaeology, Sigma Xi. He died of a heart attack in 1991, he is survived by his two sons.
