Biographical / Historical
The University of Idaho’s School of Forestry was founded in 1917, with only forty students enrolled and four faculty members. By 1937 undergraduate enrollment rose to 373 students and had limited bachelor’s degree offerings. The small forestry school expanded into graduate offerings and in 1963 was given college status and was renamed, the College of “Wildlife and Range sciences”. The college placed strong emphasis on research and has purchased various experimental and recreational locations where experimental research by faculty and students was conducted including the Taylor Ranch, Big Creek meadow, Idler’s rest, and the McCall Outdoor Science School (MOSS). The Wildland Recreation Management program was added in 1974 and continued until 1990 when the department underwent a name change to Resource, Recreation and Tourism Department, and shortly thereafter, because the Department of Conservation Social Sciences. The Department of Conservation Social Sciences was then changed in 2015 to the Department of Natural Resources and Society. The College of Forestry, Wildlife and Range Sciences has now become the College of Natural Resources that offers a large and diverse array of associates, bachelors, masters and doctorates that has a robust focus on the natural sciences.
