Biographical / Historical

The Census of Agriculture is a count of United States farms, ranches, and their workers. It includes a record of land ownership, use, production, income, expenditures, and other statistical data. Historically, the Census of Agriculture originated in 1820 as a component of the year’s decennial census. In 1840, it was separated from the decennial census, though continued to be taken the same years as the decennial until 1950. Following 1950, the Census of Agriculture has been taken at more frequent five year intervals. In 1977, Congress transferred responsibility for the Census of Agriculture from the United States Bureau of the Census to the United States Department of Agriculture.
