Biographical / Historical
Cooperative living dormitories at the University of Idaho arose during the depression in 1932 to accommodate affordable housing and food services for students who could not afford local rent prices. Among others (Ridenbaugh Hall, Senior Hall), the Idaho Club was a cooperative men’s dormitory constructed in 1935-1936. Like most cooperatives, it modeled an internal democratic structure, comprised of positions including president, vice president, secretary, and an elected council who oversaw policy and room and board affairs. In addition to accommodating room and board for students, cooperatives such as the Idaho Club also included commissaries, which sold candy and cigarettes to provide profit for members of the group. Lindley Hall was constructed in 1920 as a dedication to Ernest H. Lindley, University of Idaho President (1917-1920). A top floor was later added as an addition in 1922. In appearance, the hall was a three-story, brick building with a gabled roof. It functioned as a men’s dormitory and a cooperative kitchen after transfer to the cooperative group around 1937. The building was condemned in 1971 and later demolished in 1973. (Additional history of cooperatives at the University of Idaho can be found in box 1, folder 1 of this collection: “Idaho Club Cooperatives on U of I Campus”.)
