Biographical / Historical
In 1973, the Cleveland Health Sciences Library approved a circuit librarian program that would allow for the passing of education and staff development in the surrounding universities and medical institutions. In this program, a librarian, known as a circuit rider, would visit the participating hospitals and work with the staff to assess their needs. They would handle requests and loans made from the institutions, creating an inter-library loan within their circuit. After considering the success of the program, many more circuits would begin appearing around the country, especially in rural communities.
