Scope and Contents
Copies of articles on wood utilization written by Howe and others; and papers concerning the University of Idaho College of Forestry, including program evaluations, plans for new facilities, the kiln drying shortcourse, and results of wood drying experiments. Also a list of lumber mills in northern Idaho and copies of correspondence concerning a visit of Jack Markley of Potlatch Forests to Sanford Industries.

Biographical / Historical
John P. Howe was born 31 January 1914 in Dedham, Mass. He graduated from Amherst College in 1935 and during World War II worked for Proctor and Gamble in Ohio and Tennessee. He married Phyllis McDonald in 1941. He worked in as a production development engineer for Chadbourne Lumber Company in Maine before receiving his master's in wood science and technology from Yale University in 1955. Howe began teaching at the University of Idaho in 1956 and served as the chairman of the school's forest products department. He received his doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1966. Howe retired from UI in 1979. He was ordained in 1983 and moved to Rockport, MA. In 1990, he moved to Spokane where he died 9 June 1993.
