Shepp Ranch Diaries collection includes diaries recording daily life at a sheep and cattle ranch located in Hump, Idaho County, Idaho. Partners C.W. (Charlie) Shepp and Pete Klinkhammer also acted as recreation guides for hunting and wildlife conservation parties.

Biographical / Historical
One of the West’s premier wilderness retreats, the 104.77 acre Shepp Ranch is located within the Nez Perce national Forest at the heart of the Franck Church-River of No Return and the Gospel Hump Wilderness Areas. The acreage lies along Crooked Creek and fronts on the north bank of the Salmon River, designated as a National Wild and Scenic River. Shepp Ranch is accessible by jet boat (approximately 30 minutes) aircraft, foot, or horseback. Shepp Ranch has one of the better private, wilderness airfields approximately 2,000 feet in length.
Charlie Shepp was born in 1861 in Iowa. He and Pete Klinkhammer homestead on Crooked Creek during the winter of 1909-1910. The established Shepp ranch and were neighbors to Charlie and Polly Bemis. Following Charles Bemis' death, Shepp helped to rebuild the Bemis house in 1924. Charlie Shepp died 1936 and was buried on his ranch.
Pete Klinkhammer was born in 1881 in Minnesota. He died in 1970 and was buried in the Prairie View Cemetery in Grangeville, Idaho.
