Charles Hoffman Farm papers
Scope and Contents
The Charles Hoffman Farm records span the years 1885-1931 and consist of seven ledgers and account books belonging to Charles Hoffman and his son, Jesse Hoffman. These ledgers include accounts, journal entries, and other financial records from their farm in Nez Perce County, Idaho. Select journals include an alphabetical table of contents, recording names and topics relevant to the accounts and the page in which they are mentioned in the ledger. Some... ledgers also contain documents from the Nez Perce Farmers County Mutual Fire Insurance Company and the North Idaho Threshers Association.

Biographical / Historical
Charles Hoffman was born in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania in 1814 to Jacob and Sarah Hoffman. In his early twenties, he worked as a blacksmith in New York and a farmer in Illinois. In 1879, he moved west and established a farm of over six hundred acres around Nez Perce County, Idaho. At twenty-seven, he married Sarah J. Dowd, with whom he had three children: Sarah C, Lucy, and Ross. After Sarah J. Dowd passed away on June 4, 1876, Charles married... Lucy Shea, with whom he had nine children: Jesse, Charles, Walter, Olive, Alice, Benjamin, Elsie, Esther, and Mary. Charles died in 1907 and is buried in Kendrick, Idaho.
Jesse Hoffman was born around Nez Perce County, Idaho in 1880 to Charles Hoffman and Lucy Shea. He was the first white child born in the area. He was married to Mabel Hoffman, with whom he had at least two children: Dwight and Betty. Jesse died in 1945 in Lewiston, Idaho.
