Content Description

The materials in this collection are slides taken of the Selway Crags in the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness of north central Idaho and a package sent from David Schrader to Dennis Baird. The photographs are taken in the wilderness, of mountain ranges, lakes, and other recreation sites. These images were taken during a trip Scrader took led by Glen Hower. The first trip started on July 31, 1967, and included lakes on the west side of the Crag’s line. Included is a letter from Glen Hower which includes the names they used which differ from those used by others and the correlating names on a map. The second trip Schrader took included Al Mousseau and was from the east side of the line of the Crag’s.

Biographical / Historical

Dennis Baird is a conservationist and an author who fronted the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness History Project. David Schrader sent Dennis Baird the photographs contained within this collection. Baird is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Idaho and Director of the Selway-Bitterroot History Project. He was head of the University of Idaho Library’s Reference Department.

David Schrader was born on 9 December 1925 in Syracuse, New York. He served in the Navy during World War II. He received a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the University of Kansas in 1951. He married Evelyn Weiss in Baldwin, New York in 1954. Schrader then received a master's and then doctorate in 1963 from the University of Washington. He joined the faculty of Washington State University in April 1963 and served there until his retirement in 1995 as a professor emeritus. In 1968, he married Helen Ruth Schrader. Schrader died 7 November 2017 in Star, Idaho.
