Scope and Contents

Maynard Fosberg was a Soils Professor at the University of Idaho. This collection contains various research studies, data, soil surveys, and images relating to his work and research. Materials also focus on program information from conferences, course syllabus, communications from within the College of Agriculture, and judging information and notes from soil identification contests. The communications from with the College of Agriculture include meeting notes, memos, and class scheduling from Fosberg's time in the department.

Biographical / Historical

Maynard Axel Fosberg was born 7 July 1919 in Turlock, California. In 1940, Fosberg joined the Army Air Corp and was stationed in Lamore Air Force Base and was placed in charge of a photo lab. He was then trained on gun cameras in Denver before being transferred to Lakeland, FL for reconnaissance training, and finally Thomasville, GA to train on P1 fighters as a gun camera specialist. He was discharged in 1945. He married Margaret Williams in 1947. Fosberg attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he earned a degree in Soil Science and his masters in the same subject. He received his Doctorate from Wisconsin in Soil Science in 1963. The Fosberg's moved to Moscow in 1947 where he was employeed as a Soils professor at the University of Idaho. He retired from the University of Idaho in 1989 after 42 years. He developed the largest soils monolith collection in the United States during his career and contributed to the World Soil Monolith collection in Holland. Following his retirement he took over the annual High School FFA Idaho State Land and Soils Evaluation Contest, worked with the Latah Soil and Water Conservations Service and Palouse Land Trust. Maynard Fosberg died 18 September 2020 in MOscow, Idaho.

Abstract

Research documentation relating to Maynard A. Fosberg's research into soil and land use in Idaho. Contains various soils surveys and series in addition to materials relating to course Fosberg taught at the University of Idaho or within the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.

Arrangement

Original arrangment was kept to best of abilities. Some folders were split into two or three folders due to size. Boxes were condensed to remove empty space.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Materials were transfered to the Special Collections and Archives by the College of Agriculture in 1992 and 1993 following Fosberg's retirement.
