Biographical / Historical

Fenton S. Roskelley was born 13 January 1917 in Franklin, Idaho to Richard and Alice Roskelley. He graduated from the University of Idaho in 1938 with a degree in Journalism. He was hired by the "Spokane Daily Chronicle" prior to World War II where he covered the city desk and regional news. During WWII, he served as master sergeant of the 776th Liberty Bell anti-aircraft battalion from May 1942 to December 1945. While stationed in England, he met and married Violet May Shipman. At the end of the war, he was asked to set up a journalism school in Germany and published a paper for the troops called "The Rhine Valley News." He returned to Spokane following his time in the service. He was a writer for the "Spokaesman-Review" and "Spokane Daily Chronicle" for over 60 years. Roskelley was one of the first members of the Inland Empire Fly Fishing Club (IEFFC) in 1956. He wrote and edited the IEFFC newsletter and edited their fly pattern book. Roskelley died 30 January 2013 in Spokane, Washington.

Original arrangement kept. Duplicate copies of newspaper articles were removed.

Materials were donated by John and Joyce Roskelley in February 2020.

The book "Living to Fish: Tales of Youth, War and Outdoor Writing" by Roskelley was added to the Day-NW book collection.
