Content Description
Materials in this collection are heavily research based. There are a number of topographic maps, correspondence to others involved in the research, and data analysis and publications. The materials being researched are mostly aligned with the management of the Lewis and Clark trail. There are several documents containing the manuscript for a number of chapters in the Eastmans’ published work.

Biographical / Historical
Gene Maurice Eastman, was an author and historian. Gene and Mollie Eastman conducted extensive research into the historic Lolo Trail, publishing a book titled “Bitterroot Crossing: Lewis and Clark Across the Lolo Trail”. The contents of the book include a history of the management of the Lolo Trail that is based on field and archival research. Gene graduated from the University of Idaho, School of Forestry, where he majored in wildlife mangement. He is a certified wildlife biologist, member of the Wildlife Society, is a retired conservation officer for Idaho Department of Fish and Game. Eastman also served in the US Air Force and the Air National Guard. He was also a memeber of the Clearwater County Search and Rescue.

Abstract
This collection contains scientific and historical materials from the Lewis and Clark trail, specifically the Bitterroot, Lolo, and Nee-Mee-Poo trails. Materials include: correspondence, data analysis, topographical maps, and various other materials.
Arrangement
Arranged by subject. Some materials transferred from previous folders and envelopes. Little rearrangement required.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Donated in three parts, the first by Eugene and Mollie Eastman in 2002, another collection in 2006, and a third by Dennis Baird in 2019.
