This collection consists of personal and professional papers of University of Idaho Forest Resources professor George H. Belt, Jr. who was a member of the Forestry faculty from 1965 until his retirement in 1998 when he was named professor emeritus. The collection includes papers from his undergraduate and graduate studies, instructional materials for classes taught at the UI including Weather and Climate, forestry papers, and student theses for which he was an adviser. Additional papers document Dr. Belt's work overseas on behalf of USAID, awards, diplomas and certificates he received as well as slides of countries he visited and some used for classroom instruction. There is also a box containing research he conducted outside of the university.

Biographical / Historical

George H. Belt Jr. was born on 28 January 1938. He received his bachelor's in forest mangement from the North Carolina State University's School of Forestry in 1960. In 1962, Belt earned his master's of forestry from Yale University's School of Forestry. Additionally, he recived his Ph.D. in Forestry from Duke University School of Forestry in 1968. In 1965 he was hired as a professor of Forest Resources at the University of Idaho, a position he would hold until 1979. From March 1979 to July of 1980, Belt served as Forestry Advisor and Research Methodology Specialist for USAID/Washington. He served in a USAID Mission in New Delhi, India from 1980 to 1982. He returned to the Universtiy of Idaho in 1982 as Associate Dean for Research and Director of International Forestry Programs until 1986. He transition into a professor of Forestry with responsibility for graduate and undergraduate instrcution and research in watershed management and international forestry in August of 1986. Belt held this position until his retirement in 1998. He was named Professor Emeritus of Forest Resources at his retirement. He continutes to live in the Moscow area.

Abstract

Materials concerning Dr. George H. Belt, Jr.'s work in forestry at the University of Idaho and across the world. Includes papers, slides, photographs, and documentation materials on the subject.

Arrangement

Materials were originally housed in 7 bankers boxes seperated by subjects. During processing, materials were combined into 5.5 boxes to prevent damage from slouching. Film which was originally housed in 5 small containers were cut apart and insereted into film holders. Slides were rehoused into archival slide holders. There is 1 audio cassette with 32 minutes of materials regarding the Beaver Creek project and 16 floppy discs.

Dr. Belt's papers were donated to Special Collections and Archives August 28, 2018 by Helen N. Belt (spouse).
