Provenance
The belt buckle belonged to and was made by John Carrey, a outfitter/guide from the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho. The sheep horn used to create the buckle was given to Carrey by Jess Taylor, one of the owners of the Taylor Ranch, prior to 1969. Jerry Thiessen worked for the Idaho Department of Fish and Game as a wildlife Biologist and administrator from 1965 to 1994 and would represent the department at various functions. Around 1993, Thiessen attended the Idaho Outfitters and Guides Associations annual meeting in Boise and at an auction held during the evening banquet, acquired the belt buckle. He contacted the University of Idaho Library looking to re-home the buckle in August of 2024, as we are the current owners of the Taylor Ranch. Special Collections took ownership due to its connection with Carrey, the Taylor's, and Peek's.
